Community Storehouse solicits, warehouses, and distributes both perishable and nonperishable groceries to local families living below the poverty line. Our food programs focus on our community's children, the working poor, disabled, elderly, and otherwise disadvantaged people living in Martinsville and Henry County, Virginia. Our programs include delivering weekend food for children at local schools, to delivering groceries to the elderly, and emergency distribution on-site weekly.
Every week volunteers collect thousands of pounds of produce, dairy, meat, bakery goods, and shelf-stable items from local grocers, community businesses, churches, and civic groups. Thousands of pounds of high-quality, nutritious food that would otherwise be discarded is rescued - or generously donated - and delivered to where it's needed most. Last year we rescued over half a million pounds of food that would have been discarded and put it to good use... feeding those in need.
Community Storehouse has a 16,000 square-foot thrift store (the organization's largest fundraiser) which doubles as a training site for federal and state programs, from individuals currently on welfare being rehabilitated into the workforce, to seniors needing recent job references and skills training. We are proud site partners of SCSEP (Senior Community Service Employment Program) and VIEW (Virginia's Initiative for Employment not Welfare).

We believe the root causes of hunger must be addressed to realize our long-term goal of eliminating hunger.
A monetary donation allows us to purchase fresh, perishable items that are vital for a balanced diet but cannot be traditionally donated.
